We will add one more light to the scene and then learn to apply shadows to the lights in Maya.

Select any one of the existing spot lights and duplicate it. Reduce it's intensity to '2.0'. Look through the newly duplicated spot light, rotate and pan the view so that it is aimed at the base of the table from the front in Maya as shown in the image.

Switch back to the persp view and Render the scene in Maya, to see the result. Now you will notice that the very first light (spotLight1) that we created has got relatively little impact on the scene (due to the other lights). So increase it's intensity to '4' in Maya since it is the chief spot light that illuminates the key angle of the view.

Creating Shadows in Maya

Don't you feel happy that our table-vase scene is getting better and better as we progress through the pages? There's just one more element that we need to add to our scene - and that is the Shadow. We have different types of shadows available in Maya. As in a real world, shadow is cast by an object hindering the path of light. All we need to do is switch on Shadows for the lights we choose in Maya.

In Maya, we have two broad categories of shadows available. The first one is called Depth Mapped Shadows. It is the simplest and the least computationally intensive among the shadows available in Maya. We will apply depth mapped shadows to our current scene and see how it looks. The other kind of shadow called Ray Traced Shadow is more realistic and computationally intensive. But they provide the best solution in Maya when it comes to scenes in which light passes through semi transparent objects.

Creating a Depth Mapped Shadow in Maya is very easy. Select any of the spot lights that you have created and in the Attribute Editor in Maya, under the Shadows category (expand it by clicking on the arrow if it is not already expanded), and within the Depth Map Shadow Attributes check the 'Use Depth Mapped Shadows' checkbox. Repeat this for the other two spot lights too and render the scene in Maya. You will see the lights beautifully casting shadow of our vase on the table -top.

You can increase the quality of the Depth mapped shadow in Maya by increasing the value of the attribute 'Resolution' under the Depth Mapped Shadow Attributes. The resolution determines how big the shadow's map size will be (the bigger the better) and increasing it will reduce jagged edges in the shadows when you take bigger sized render outputs.

Save the scene as "chap-03-table-vase-scene-textured" in Maya, if you haven't done so already. You can download the completed scene here for reference and learning purpose.

It was an amazing job friend. Give yourself a treat for the effort you have put in for this learning investment. This concludes the basic shading, lighting and rendering chapter in Maya. But these topics doesn't end here. We will take each of them and detail on the advanced techniques in the advanced chapters. So merrily go on learning...
