In this page, we will look into how we can scale our cube using Maya
Scaling an object in Maya:
Scaling is nothing but increasing or reducing the size of an object. You can scale an object using the 'Scale' tool in Maya in a way similar to Move and Rotate. Select the object you want to scale and make sure that the 'object-type' is the active selection mode in Maya . Now click on the Scale Tool maya scale tool from the Tool-box. You will see manipulators extending to three axes. Each axis has a colored small box at the end. Click on any of those boxes and drag the mouse. The object will get scaled along that axis in Maya.

The type of scaling that you have done right now is non-uniform scaling because you stretched the object along a single axis, causing the object's shape to be altered. The other kind of scaling is called uniform scaling in Maya where all the three dimensions of the object changes equally at the same time.

In order to perform Uniform Scaling in Maya, click and drag on the pale yellow colored small box present at the center of the cube object. Our cube will start to shrink or expand based on the direction of your movement in Maya. Since the mode of scaling is uniform, all the axes will scale in equal amounts and the shape of the object remains same, though the size changes in Maya.

NOTE: You can Undo any action in Maya by pressing 'z' . Please note that the z is lowercase. So if you need to undo, make sure that the caps-lock on your keyboard is not ON. For performing a Redo in Maya press Shift+z, or keeps your caps-lock on and press z. (In short z results in undo and Z results in redo)

You can perform multiple undos and redos by pressing the respective keys repeatedly.

Moving, Rotating and Scaling using the Channel Box in Maya

In Maya you have the power to drag and define as well as enter the values yourself manually. So far we had been using the former approach for moving, rotating and scaling our cube in Maya. Now let's look at the Channel Box. It lets you enter numeric values for the axes with respect to moving, rotating and scaling.

Click on the Show or Hide Channel Box / Layer Editor button maya show-hide channel box at the top right corner (the right most one among the three buttons), to display/hide the channel box panel in Maya. (Well if it was already open, you will see one panel getting hidden when you clicked on the button. So click it again to show it)

Inside the Channel Box / Layer Editor panel, you will see three similar tab buttons along the panel's top left corner as shown maya show channel box. Click on the left most one. It displays the Channel box alone (The second button shows the layer editor alone and the third button displays both the channel box and layer editor). The channel box appears as shown in the figure to the right in Maya.

You can see the Translate/Move co-ordinate values, Rotation angles and Scale ratios in the channel box in Maya.

The Translation values correspond to the three axes X, Y and Z. Just type down a different value and press enter to see the change in the scene. The cube will get relocated based on the values you entered. The values are nothing but co-ordinate positions. If you move an object using the Move Tool, the same change gets reflected in the channel box in Maya as absolute values.

Similarly you can enter the rotation by angle and scale by scale-ratio in Maya.

Note: Currently our cube's name is 'pCube1' as shown in the Channel box, you can change it in Maya by directly typing it down there and pressing Enter.

Congratulations on completing the first chapter of Maya. That was truly amazing. Keep practising until I come up with more exciting lessons.
